Brussels is a city full of contrasts. Beautiful in places but extremely neglected in others. The museums and boulevards were amazing, the stations and parks in need of some attention. There was a great deal of construction and roadworks going on when I visited, which has to be done, I know, but made walking around difficult at times. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Alegria which is well located and very comfortable. We had a great 2 hour walking tour of Bruges which we booked through Get Your Guide. Our guide Peter was excellent. We arrived on a Sunday and the taxi dropped us out of town as traffic is restricted on a Sunday jeez indded! It took 30 minutes to trundle our suitcases to the hotel. So, after that initial mishap and feeling like we were in the Truman Show, we thawed and thoroughly enjoyed our 3 days in the city. Lovely people, restaurants and bars. Our stay was disappointing due to poor cleanliness, inadequate amenities, and understaffing, with malfunctioning air conditioning and privacy breaches. Its inconvenient location led to frequent transportation issues, and unhelpful staff showed little concern despite complaints. Blankenberge is for my family a special vacation destination. We like it due to the convenient transport, the train stops in the center of the city. The city is not big and has its charm, by walking it is possible to reach each attraction. The tram allows you to go to the other cities and towns located along the Belgian coast. Zaventem is close to the airport - our main reason for choosing this town. It is an easy journey by train into Brussels central which I would recommend because traffic and parking is difficult. Good choice of restaurants with some posh chocolate shops and good beers. Quite a good range of chain stores and niche smaller shops. Really like its compactness and easy train ride from Brussels. Visit Hasselt tourist centre is about 50m from our hotel Het Menneke. Hasselt Greeters offer free personal introduction to Hasselt. The Japanese Garden, the largest in Europe, is well worth a visit. Best restaurant we found was de Orangerie, sited in a long atrium. Nice menu includes Flemish favourites. Attentive staff.
