Port Ellen is perfect for whisky lovers.
Port Ellen is perfect for whisky lovers. There are many great distilleries in walking distance (Port Ellen, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and soon another one) and many more by bus or taxi (but taxis are sometimes hard to get and there is no Uber available).Guest review bySilvioSwitzerland - 8.0

Bridgend is located about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal in Port Askaig (Islay). The town is centrally located to both the Northern and Southern distillery districts. If you are not a whisky enthusiast, birdwatching, hiking, and great scenery are only a short drive away.Guest review byMarkCanada - 10

There is a short but pleasant walk of just over half a mile to the little lighthouse on the coast north of the town. The local museum is small but well worth a visit. The locals are friendly and helpful. It's a good jumping off point for visiting sites like Finlaggan Trust and the Cultoon Stone Circle and places like Portnahaven (we saw seals cavorting there). The food at the Port Charlotte Hotel is splendid.Guest review byCarolineAustralia - 8.0

BOWMORE is a good town to make it your base "camp" to go around to visit the distilleries. It meets your basic needs for restaurants, grocery store, pharmacy, post office and a place to get gas. The people were friendly and helpful. For us during our time period for the visit, there was a big street repaving project going on which made the streets very rough to drive on - I believe that this improvement should be finished now. We enjoyed our visit here. The one piece of advice that I would make - is to make reservations for dinner at any place you want to eat at.Guest review byPatriciaCanada - 10

Islay is a beautiful place, we could have spent another week there to fully enjoy the island and the locale. We were focused on whiskey (uisge beatha) but also enjoyed local walks, the woolen mill and local restaurants. Booking is recommended for any meal you're eating in a restaurant. Also if self catering - there are only a couple of Co-op stores (no big supermarket). You can feed yourself but choice is limited.Guest review byMaryUnited Kingdom - 2.0

Pubs/bar - try all of them (only 3 if including Sea Salt Bistro). I only had time to visit one and chose unwisely - the Ardview Inn and wasn't impressed (only a snapshot - maybe depends on the staff at the time) and LOCAL Finlaggan beer there was £2 more than other pubs and inns I visited in the island (over £7 vs £5 elsewhere!) But it's good beer - buy it at the Coop or another pub. Views beautiful from the harbour front. Use the Coop and make your summer picnic on one of the four benches provided. The town up keep is good. Clearly looked after by all involved including local council. 3 mile whisky trail. Get bus back from Ardbeg. But do check out the 4m plus standing stone near Portintruan.Guest review byBENJAMINUnited Kingdom - 10
I can’t say enough about this marvellous place.
I can’t say enough about this marvellous place. The beautiful setting, the attentive and friendly staff, the food, the very comfortable room … it was all fantastic and added up to an unforgettable experience that I would love to do again. Thanks for the magic.Guest review byRickCanada - 8.0
Great little village with the friendliest people throughout.
Great little village with the friendliest people throughout. 3 very good restaurants within walking distance. Bus runs from here to Portnahaven in the South and to the main other towns (Bowmore/Port Ellen) though ends at 6pm. For food, drink and friendly chats recommend The Port Charlotte Hotel, also the live music Sunday & Wednesday. Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen excellent seafood from a short menu. Worth a walk to Port Mor Community Cafe for breakfast.Guest review byR.MoffatUnited Kingdom - 10
