FAQs about hotels in Crete
Centuries of History, Days of Sunshine
The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.
Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.
Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.
On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.
We could go on and on about magnificent Crete beaches, but whichever resort you choose, you can be almost guaranteed fantastic food and a good helping of sunshine.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 1,050 reviewsI really have to say, I'm travaling a lot (4-6 times per year to the different Countrys-Places) and in the most of the time, the hotels doesn't look or fullfil the expectations. Always its something, which gives you the feeling, that the description or pictures are not 100% right or matching with the real situation. That's why I said, now I will write a review, because they really deserved that at all! From the reception employees till to the cleaning ladies! When we arrived, we stood in the front of the new building. We get a friendly welcome, nice room and walked to the beach. I walked around and checked the pool areas and dine opportunities. I really was surprised that everything looked same like pictures and descrition. I like that is a hotel size between Boutique Hotel and grand Resort. If you are looking for a Hotel with good chill opportunities and good food, thats your place. We loved the food (try the Gyros Chicken and Mussels which are cooked in Uzo), furnishing style, pool and beach area, employees (Eleni by the Pool area, very friendly women) and the vibes of all of them😀 You are really close to Heraklion City, 10min by taxi around 15Euro per way and 20min to the airport around 30Euro per way. Spa Massage first 10min are for free, we booked 30min more (40min) was also really good. The a la Carte restaurant was a dream of location and ambience, also food with ***** level. We were there for 3 nights and I wished we can stay longer, so that means....For sure I will come back again! 🥰Guest review byDuyguSwitzerland

The old town and harbour are stunning- really picturesque with a happy, vibrant vibe, lots to see and loads of small, independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The challenge is trying to find one’s way back to any particular shop, as the Old Town is such a maze of narrow cobbled streets with quaint, pretty houses. I had been told it’s a great place to visit but it vastly exceeded my expectations.Guest review byKayUnited Kingdom - 4.0
Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic.
Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic. It is like peak hour in Sydney constantly. Parking is horrendous. I would recommend staying out of Heraklion. Drive to Knossos Palace, but go early. The other attraction for us was the Archaeological Museum. Get a uber or taxi to that. The foreshore looks like they gave up on it years ago. After Chania, Heraklion was a disappointment.Guest review byWalAustralia - 6.0

Like many Cretan coastal towns and villages, Rethymno is overwhelmed by us tourists. It's distressing to walk very crowded mediaeval streets surrounded by souvenir shops. The famous bakeries are wonderful and the harbour is really beautiful. Parking has been addressed but the experience is still not pleasant. We found having a drink and a light meal on the waterfront a joyless experience, crowded area and surly service. I would recommend Rethymno for a quick visit to see the Old Town bakeries and the Harbour.Guest review byJohnAustralia - 10.0

Not really a resort, but a working town, has a small, pretty square with a few bars and tavernas. A few good tavernas and bars down on the seafront. A lot more could be made of the beach with a little effort.Guest review byNatasha_78_1United Kingdom - 6.0

Difficult to judge because we came early in the season when there was a cold wind blowing and not all the places were open. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . There were a number of apparently abandoned and ill-maintained buildings, which made the place appear less attractive.Guest review byAMELIAUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Malia is a great base for exploring eastern Crete,as it is well served by public transport, car hire is easy and reasonable, but if you just want to eat, drink ,sunbathe and play in a pool,on a beach or in a club or bar it is great too.Guest review byrawdenUnited Kingdom - 8.0

lovely holiday spot, plenty of shops and restaurants, everyone extremely friendly and helpful. About an hour from airport, went to spinalonga and did a few walks, also did the 4 hour train ride which was lovely to see mountains, bit of history etc, wasnt too hot. Both of the bays were good and safe for swimming - one of them a bit pebbly getting in, the other was fine. Supermarkets well stocked. Elounda is flat so easy for walking although pavements a little bumpy. All very accessible and walkableGuest review byAnonymous - 10.0
My favourite place in Crete, it can be whatever you want it...
My favourite place in Crete, it can be whatever you want it to be: quiet and slow, fast and adventurous, relaxing but all the time excellent food. Pick your places by checking reviews and you'll not be disappointed. My favourite restaurants in the city are Tamam, Ginger Concept, Salis, though the list can go on. Places to go out for drinks: The Botanist, Sinagogi or any of the places around EMPRIME on Potie street. Outside the city centre don't miss Periplous, loved the food quality and view and somehow I always end up at Almyriki in Stavros, the view and food are to die for, the beach is just in front. I can go on with so many other places, but it's best to discover and make your own favourites. Getting around the city is easy by walking, however you need a car or scooter to go to beaches outside the city and to visit other small villages.Guest review byCatRomania
