The service was so thoughtful as well; on our last day we were snowed in and couldn't get back to Tokyo, but the hotel made sure we could extend our reservation one night and offered a complimentary taxi to the train station the next day. Great visits possible in this area - the Ropeway (cable car) up into the alps, the Onsen, Hida Village was superb and had loads of additional activities for children, and Takayama was a complete surprise with is bijou shops in the beautiful old quarter. Shizuoka is a hidden gem.
Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. I forgot about the library but overall not many sights near the train stations for a tourist. I came from the Ogizawa side of the Tateyama Kurobe route and thought that I could have taken the shinkansen to Nagano or train to Kanazawa to spend the day/night there instead. However, Toyama seems like an ideal overnight stop from the Tateyama side. Despite being a fish port, I thought that the popular kaiten sushi shops by the train stations are a little overrated, though still good. Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us. Easy to get to from Osaka. Stayed in a traditional ryokan (tattoo friendly). Spent the day walking along the harbour to the ropeway up to Atami castle which had several different art displays and museums including an adults only one and a great view of the coast.
