- From $479.48 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.5Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 94 reviewsEverything was exceptional. The traditional building was beautifully maintained and every corner was photo worthy. The staff were friendly and took very good care of us. Our room was beautiful and spacious, we had a wooden tub in our bathroom to soak in and amazing garden views from the windows. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. Onsens were wonderful and each one had its own charm and feel. The place is a short walk from the bus stop and next to the bridges and bamboo grove, allowing easy access in the evening. The stay at this ryokan was definitely a highlight of our Japan trip and we’d love to stay here again.Guest review byHsuanNew Zealand
- From $511.80 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 104 reviewsFrom the moment of arrival to drop off at train station, top class treatment throughout. It’s a historic, well-established hotel nestled in a quiet forest catering to celebrities and well-heeled travelers since 1894. Service and meal offerings were spectacular; the rooms modern and well-appointed, on par with any four-and five star hotels. Something that really caught my attention was the cushioned floors in the room; walking on them gave a level of comfort I’ve not felt at other hotels. And end your day at the iconic bar where John Lennon entertained those gathered on that piano when he stayed here.Guest review byEdwinUnited States
- From $238.77 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Excellent - What previous guests thought, 3,722 reviewsThe view of the Fuji mountain is the best thing in this hotel , Also the greenary is nice its like forest living - But again the Fuji mountain is super room's patio , Location is a bit away from city so no nearby restaurants or convienc- So going to the city center or the bus station will be difficult , The hotel provides bycycles for their guests which were very helpful to us . , Also pickup and dropoff from hotel is very helpful . , Staff is also very helpful .. , Overall we really liked our stay here.Guest review byGOLDIEChina
- From $283.73 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Excellent - What previous guests thought, 2,639 reviewsThe room was ryokan style with plenty of room and clean. The bedding mattress & pillow was comfortable. Got a massage after taking advantage of the onsen which was great after a full day of sightseeing. Had a buffet breakfast that offered a good variety of food options, both Japanese and Western for a reasonable rate on our departure morning. The location was easy walking distance from Takayama train terminal & a free shuttle service to the Hotel & terminal was available.Guest review byStevenUnited States
- From $145.30 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very Good - What previous guests thought, 105 reviewsThe rustic cottage is in beautiful area and very clean and comfortable. The host and his wife were wonderful and so hospitable. They are some of the nicest people we have met on our trip! They even came to pick us up at the station and drove us to a late lunch after when they found out we had a long day and hadn’t eaten. We also enjoyed the peaceful surroundings! Thank you so much for making our stay for our son’s graduation at ISAK even more memorable😃Guest review byIreneUnited States
- From $203.41 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.5Very Good - What previous guests thought, 328 reviewsThis place took good serive to another level. From the start of my stay till the end, the staff went above and beyond to ensure the comfort for my husband and I for our stay there (for example, the check in was in the lounge instead of the counter where they guided us to our room, and the excellent and prompt service for our in room meals). Rooms are clean, spacious, and comfortable. The access to the beach and the onsen facilities were great!Guest review byAmaraUnited States

Enjoyed our side trip to inuyama castle - easy to get to by local train. Also a good trip to Atsuta Jingu Shrine. If you take a train on the Meitetsu Nagoya main line and get off at Jingumae station, an entrance to the shrine is just across the road from the station. (Main road, but there are pedestrian crossings). Didn't leave much time to explore Nagoya itself. Did get to Osu mall, which was quite interesting, but a little over-hyped we thought. Area round station itself was good compared with many cities - much more salubrious and more like being in a reasonably upmarket commercial/shopping area. Could certainly have happily spent another full day in Nagoya if our schedule had allowed.Guest review byGaryNew Zealand - 10.0
Kanazawa was awesome.
Kanazawa was awesome. It’s a mix of traditional and modern with everything you need at your fingertips. It’s a great home base, especially if you are driving as it’s within range of lots of great places.Guest review byPaulAustralia - 10.0

Great visits possible in this area - the Ropeway (cable car) up into the alps, the Onsen, Hida Village was superb and had loads of additional activities for children, and Takayama was a complete surprise with is bijou shops in the beautiful old quarter. There seemed to be plenty more to do including museums etc.Guest review byKimUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We really liked Matsumoto and it was a much more fun and interesting city than we expected. We had an overnight stay, largely to visit the famous castle, after visiting Kiso valley. Would happily have stayed longer.Guest review byrebeccaCanada - 10.0

Niigata is a refreshing small city, and the river has beautiful views of both sides. Each side of the river has green pedestrian and bicycle rider paths. There is easy access to the Performing Arts Center with its living rooftop garden on it's oval shaped building. Hakusan Park is not to be missed - an oasis away from the hubbub of office and city life! Complete with a lotus pond, bridges, a large temple, Tori gates, and a pond with a wisteria-covered bridge. Very scenic. There are the shops on Furumachidori - a covered avenue with adorable shops, bronze figures of baseball players, and the Japan Animation and Manga College is on this avenue. Along this dori you might see a box of turtles sunning on the sidewalk!Guest review byJeannieUnited States - 10.0
Shizuoka is a hidden gem.
Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. We speak very limited Japanese, but were welcomed and managed in small local restaurants and Izakayas.Guest review byMarkAustralia - 8.0
What we liked most was the Yayoi Kusama Museum.
What we liked most was the Yayoi Kusama Museum. However it was closed on Monday, the only day we had during our stay. So we had to change our onward ticket to extend to Tue afternoon so that we can visit the museum on Tue.Guest review byNancyCanada - 10.0
I recommend staying.
I recommend staying. I wrote a long review separately which I hope is useful; please refer to that. In addition, for young children, you can visit the sheep shed where they keep the sheep to see sheep up close, wander down and the up the hill behind reception, and get the best tasting soft serve ever from the restaurant!Guest review byDavinosJapan
