- From $204.28 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Excellent - What previous guests thought, 675 reviewsThe hotel located in very good environment surrounded with mountain view. Me and my family had such a great time during stay, the staff are very nice to our family, even they're not good in English. We booked the room with half-board ( dinner + breakfast included) For dinner the hotel set the private room for each family, the food was beyond our expectation!! the old woman who served us are very polite and so kind to the kids. I feel so sorry that on the next morning we went for the breakfast late about 30min. because my misunderstood I thought it was gonna be like buffet breakfast, but I was wrong the breakfast was set up at the same room as dinner and the time for both dinner and breakfast must be booked so the staff will set up the room and table. As I told you we were late for breakfast about 30min. the staff was waiting at the front door of dining room and the food were set up on the table already, I felt so guilty , and I must apologize to the staff , there were waiting for us patiently . After we finished the breakfast I apologized to them. The staff said "Daijobu desu" with the smiling face and kind voice. Thank you for prepare such a great and wonderful service to us. By the way I will definitely come back to stay here again for you sure If I have a chance to go to Takayama.Guest review byฺBongkotThailand
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Excellent - What previous guests thought, 2,473 reviewsWe had a wonderful stay at Magome Chaya! We booked a private double room and messaged them in advance, asking to include meals in our plan (breakfast and dinner). Both were delicious and served on their restaurant across the street. Communication was great from start to end, and they did inform us several times in advance that it's cash payment only - plan accordingly. The rooms are on the second floor, together with shared bathrooms. On the first floor, you have more bathrooms and also the washroom (female and male), a lounge area, a small guest kitchen, and a laundry room. We slept well, and it was quiet during the night - rooms have heaters, so it wasn't cold. The pillow is indeed, as other reviews mention, a bit hard. I slept without it - perhaps if they changed them for a more 'generic' one, it'd please more people ☺️ The minshuku is located at a beautiful spot in Magome, so I'd most definitely recommend this place! Book and plan in advance, as accommodations get full quickly here. Magome is beautiful, and the Nakasendo Trail is an easy one. I highly recommend it for everyone! Thanks for having us 🙏🏻Guest review byGiovanaUnited Kingdom
- From $756.04 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 1,065 reviewsLOVE EVERYTHING! Had a perfect stay in Miyama Ouan. From the staff, food, onsen and so on. It was a long drive from Kyoto to Takayama and when the bus arrived from the last station the free shuttle for pick-up is already there waiting for us, probably due to heavy snowfall at that time, THANK YOU! the resort is just a 5-10mins walk from the station but its impossible with all the snow. All the staff are kind and accommodating, they always make sure that your stay is comfortable and pleasant. Love their Yakuta, they let you chose which design you like. The room is spacious ,clean and the view from the bath is great. the onsen is perfect with a bit of snow falling . the view from the restaurant every breakfast is unparalleled. Thank you Miyama for giving me an unforgettable winter experience. Will definitely come back again!Guest review byRose AnnUnited Arab Emirates
- From $306.23 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Excellent - What previous guests thought, 4,883 reviewsThis might be the best value hotel in Japan. The rooms are SO spacious and clean and comfortable. There is a fantastic gym located nearby (ask the front desk for a pass). The rooftop onsen were amazing, and there were private family ones available too. Free drink nightly (a draft beer or juice). Decent breakfast spread. And easy enough location from the station and the big tourist spots. My partner is very tall and even he was comfortable here!Guest review byMayaJapan
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.3Very Good - What previous guests thought, 530 reviewsAmazing facilities with beautiful mens and women’s onsens + a mixed gender onsen and private onsens. The apartments were clean and had everything we needed. Overall the stay was great value as well compared to other similar hotels we have stayed in. The best part of the experience was the food. They easily made incredible vegan food to accommodate our dietary needs, with deluxe multi course balanced meals for breakfast and dinner.Guest review byaveryPhilippines

The 8km trail from Magome was great and there were buses going from the station to take you to the start of that short trail. On the return you could either walk to the train station a short walk from Tsumago or catch a bus back to Magome then another back to Nakatsugawa station. Lots of options and times. A beautiful and picturesque walk.Guest review byFrangapaniAustralia - 10.0
RELAXING QUIET GIFU!
RELAXING QUIET GIFU! We just wanted to visit other places in Japan. We have been to Japan a few times already. We like going to these kind of relaxing places. We went hiking, we walked everywhere since everything was walkable. We had so much local food and sake of course! ONSEN! Nature everywhere! We also met some of my aunt's family and friends. It felt like a home. We love everything in here. We could have stayed longer but will be back and will see the other sights. Thank you GIFU! :)Guest review byisi paniniPhilippines - 10.0

Gero has so much to share, with food, including Hida beef, yes get familiar with it. It's top level Wagyu beef and is from Hida the region that Gero is situated. The city is easy to get around in the snow (in Winter) and in the rain (in Spring), with places that are easy to walk or ride share to. Gero to most is a journey to get to with taking the trains, but it's well worth the journey, having seen cherry blossoms in the ever greens AND the snow falling like in a "snow globe", encrusting the tress, during the train ride. We are fortunate to have experienced Gero twice and now looking for a third stay, in Autumn for the changing of the leaves!Guest review byRonaldoUnited States - 10.0
1 day experience is perfect.
1 day experience is perfect. The tourist site can be done in a few hours if your arrive before noon. Next is to enjoy a good hotel stay with onsen and their gourmet dinner onsite from late afternoon to night. Follow by breakfast and leave to next destination. There is a storage place next to the bus terminal if you have luggage to store for a few hours and check out tourist venue next to it before heading to the hotel. We chose to ship our large luggage from Tokyo to Kyoto via the Family Mart or Yamato shipping services from Tokyo.Guest review byLianneUnited States - 10.0
The historic Main Street in the Iwamura Castle Town is...
The historic Main Street in the Iwamura Castle Town is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings of the country. It is a charming town where I could have spent the day in order to both hike to the castle ruins and take a leisurely stroll through the town. There were many artisans, restored homes and gardens, and cafés to enjoy. I had plenty of time to hike to the ruins since I started at 5:30AM. But I only had 90 minutes in town and that was just not enough. I would have loved to have stayed overnight one more night but I was at the end of my 11 day travels and had the 6 hours travel day to the airport awaiting me. Most vendors only take cash (unless you have the PayPay app on your phone) so be prepared.Guest review byChristinaUnited States - 10.0

We arrived here after our first four nights in Tokyo and welcomed the peacefulness and pace of the town. We walked two legs of the Nakasendo Way using Nakatsugawa as our base: one leg walking from Nakatsugawa to Magome and the other bussing to Magome and walking to Tsumago from there and then returning to Nakatsugawa to our delightful guest house. Everyone we met here was helpful and kind. .Guest review byDianeCanada - 10.0
