Emmen is a beautiful city with a lot to see and do. Wildlands is always worth a visit and seeing the hunebeds. The Atlas theatre always has something going on and worthwhile going to. Thijs and Co is a great place to eat and they often have live music. The Brasserie is another great place to eat with great food. Meppel is a really nice town in Drenthe. Come here for a taste of the real Netherlands - well away from the tourists. We travelled to Assen to attend an important art exhibition at the Drents. We had no other itinerary, other than to see the exhibition, and leave. What a pleasant surprise! Friendly, engaging locals, and a pretty little town that is really easy to get around. We stayed the night, and were happy we did. Meppel is a quiet town located in bucolic surrounding. Despite some bulk agribusiness on the outskirts, Meppel retains a pleasant pedestrianised centre. It is located on the long-distance cycle route LF9 and the spectacular village of Giethoorn is 35 mins cycling away.
