We had an absolute crush on Hotel Cicioso in Évora. It’s a charming boutique hotel that has recently opened, and everything has been thoughtfully designed with great taste and refinement. The architecture is stunning, blending authenticity and modern elegance beautifully. The interior decoration is exquisite, with every detail contributing to a warm and soothing atmosphere. The welcome was flawless — the staff are incredibly kind, attentive, and always ready to help. We truly appreciated the peacefulness of the place, the comfort of the rooms, and the overall quality of the facilities. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wholeheartedly recommend this hotel. FAQs about hotels in Alentejo

Castles, Cliffs and Countryside

Sleepy Alentejo is an agricultural region of rolling hills and cork plantations, south of the Tagus River. Many of the Booking.com accommodation options are Alentejo guest houses featuring traditional wooden beds with painted headboards.

The main city is historic Évora with its medieval cathedral, partly intact walls and remains of a Roman temple. There are also Roman remnants in Beja, with its hilltop castle and whitewashed houses, and Serpa, whose aqueduct forms part of the city walls.

Mértola is nestled in the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, while Portalegre is the gateway to the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Also here are beautiful Marvão, set on a steep escarpment and guarded by a castle, and Castelo de Vide whose castle is on a less-pronounced hill.

The South-West Alentejo and Vicentine Natural Park is on Portugal’s west coast and many Alentejo beach hotels are found in Vila Nova de Milfontes and nearby  Zambujeira do Mar, on a clifftop reminiscent of the Algarve.

By the Spain border, hilltop Monsaraz is partly enclosed by walls of a castle overlooking Alqueva Lake, formed by the dam downstream. Across the lake is the castle of Mourão, while to the north is Estremoz, known for colourful marble. East is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Elvas, whose 6 km aqueduct and 2 star-shaped forts are quite a sight.

Almograve is a beautiful town close to an amazing beach.

Almograve is a beautiful town close to an amazing beach. The town itself was smaller than the surrounding towns with less amenities , like restaurants to choose from, but we were only there for one night so it was fine. We walked down the road to the beach to enjoy an amazing sunset. The weather was beautiful while we were there. ,

Lovely hostess, fabulous location high up so we enjoyed the sunset. Apartment was very clean & well equipped, large, comfortable bed. Wifi very strong. Nice luxury whilst walking 12 days of the Fisherman's trail. Beware the Mercado in the town was closed at 3.30 so we purchased sardines, cheese & wine fir our dinner at the apartment as it us 2.5km out of town

An interesting town, the centre enclosed within city walls.

An interesting town, the centre enclosed within city walls. Some very pleasant squares, small and large. The castle is worth a visit, with views of the surrounding countryside and de Graça fort to the north. Entry tickets cheaper for over 65s, which is often the case in Portugal. We loved the Igreja das Dominicas with its unusual shape, amazing tiles and wall paintings. We wanted to go to the Museum of Modern Art, but it was closed for renovations. Went to the Fort of St Luzia instead, which was very interesting, particularly with its links to the Duke of Wellington and the Peninsular War. Some very good value restaurants and cafés. We went to the restaurant at our hotel (São João de Deus) and thought the food was excellent quality, with amazingly low prices for some delicious starters in particular.

The place is authentic and the castle perhaps the best in Portugal, not too big or overwhelming. Then there are the historic walls, a history lovers paradise. And don't forget the food, first rate. This is the "real" untouched Portugal.

This area is good for many side trips. I would recommend visiting Marváo in the morning; then Cascata Trail de Marvão in the afternoon with a little side trip to Espanha (while in the area). I would also suggest a visit to the Museu da Tapeçaria de Portalegre - Guy Fino and having dinner in Castelo de Vide.

Evora is a beautiful historical town with a really relaxed vibe (maybe not in high season, but in late October it was perfect). A very walkable town compared to some of the really hilly cities of Portugal. Lots of great restaurants. I like slow travel, and just getting lost wandering through tiny quaint little streets...and Evora was perfect for that.
