Sincere staff (mainly a capable family of mother, daughter and a brother) providing the best attention to guests. Made me feel looked after from all aspects. It is the best experience in my two weeks trip in the winter as a solo female older aged traveller.

As a tourist, this is as close as you can get to living as part of a Japanese family, and in a historic 400 year old house to boot. You enter to the warmest welcome in English from the owner and manager Torazo, who settles you in and then provides help and advice through the stay from his post behind reception. He encourages you to make the yukata and kimono they provide for free as your go-to clothes around the inn and indeed the town - a great touch, even if we didn't go as far as donning the wooden slippers outside! We'd chosen half board, and this was our favourite bit out of all the positives of this inn - served in your own screened dining room around a low table. Every meal had about a dozen small but involved dishes, a lot of the ingredients which we had difficulty identifying but which were almost without exception memorably delicious. It was fun trying all sorts of dishes you'd never know to order, and we ended each meal nicely full. The inn itself is a delight, timeless with ancient polished wood beams, tight woven matting, sliding screens. We'd chosen a room with futons, which had a small entrance area having a basin at one end and toilet behind a door at the other, and then the main room behind another sliding door. The beds were large and comfortable, and piled with thick blankets, glorious to nest under. Two heaters in the room kept it toasty even when it hit -13⁰ outside with snow. Each afternoon we retired for a luxurious snooze, how could we not. Downstairs at the back of the inn are the two indoor onsen (small hot spring spas). This area decorated with beautiful light wooden panelling, and leads to the fairytale garden. A stone bridge curves over a brook, the path taking you past the classic Japanese evergreens to an entrance hung with blinds. Here is the outdoor onsen, the only one in Yamanochi - and it is yours to enjoy privately. We sat in the pool with the steam rising and the snow falling on us, and marvelled.

The bath and sauna was exceptional, as was the host Kazuo-san (and the rest of the staff)! We also really liked the bar attached to the hotel - Openbook Yama. It is a branch of a bar in Golden Gai - really cool addition to the property!

Guests can use the spa and wellness centre with a hot spring bath, hot tub, and public bath, as well as a garden. This is a quaint and beautiful property in stargazing village Aichi. If you arrive before 5pm you can have welcome drinks at the lobby. The dinner is unique with Salmon and Horsemeat Sashimi, coal BBQ with scallops, Unagi, prawns, fish, shabu shabu sukiyaki style with marbled wagyu beef that is thinly sliced (melts in your mouth) and lots of fresh vegetables. The sesame tofu with jellified soup was unique. We enjoyed the dinner very much - extremely generous portions - they made the salmon corn rice dish into onigiris so we could pack back to the room because we could not finish. There is a small and very clean onsen in the hotel, the girls and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel room had Japanese style robes that you could wear for dinner and throughout the hotel. It was very comfortable and an enjoyable experience. Breakfast was again impressive. Western style breakfast was sliced potato gratin with sausages and tomato or garlic ranch sauce served with 3 types of bread with margarine and apple jam (white, wheat and tomato bun). The bread was served warm. The Japanese style breakfast came with a bucket of warm Japanese fluffy rice, and a basket of condiments like seaweed, preserved vegetables and plums, lotus, scrambled eggs. There was some hot soup and tea that you can pour over rice. They also served us freshly hand ground coffee and some matcha. The kids had apple juice. At 9pm there is a complimentary stargazing opportunity - Hama-san was very friendly, showing us the different constellations and setting up the telescope to show us the moon and Saturn with its rings. The night we were there 8 Sep 9pm there was a super full bright moon, so it outshone the stars. Despite that we still saw Vega, Ursa Major and Scheat a star in Pegasus (a red giant). When I woke up in the middle of the night to use the washroom - I saw Orion’s Belt and Sirius in Canis Major. The kids enjoyed the glamping room, which had up to 6 beds.

In the wellness area you will find a hot tub. The area is popular for skiing. This was one of the best ski holidays we have been on. The hotel was beautiful - amazing décor, comfortable room, great private onsen and shared spaces, most delicious food (English breakfast and mostly Japanese dinner), helpful staff. The location is really on the slopes of Norikura (which is linked to Cortina), and an easy walk to the shuttle bus for access to the rest of the Hakuba resorts. Hotel provides pick up and drop off from local train/bus stations, so we really didn't need to rent a car. We opted for the half board option and just really relaxed and enjoyed skiing and chilling in the hotel.
